Pietra Dura is an art-historical term for the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. The stonework is assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible.
This huge beautiful Victorian bracelet?(ca1880) is?a wonderful?representation of the Pietra Dura art! Most likely of Italian descent, the?bracelet is comprised of six large oval Pietra Dura links held within a beautiful 18kt rosy gold setting. In the middle of each link?is a wonderful floral design depicting colorful flowers and leaves, which stand out dramatically against the rich black background. The inlaid stones include wonderful green, blue, white, yellow, and red colors, and the design is so fine that it almost appears to be a painting. Surrounding each floral?design is a twisted gold rope bezel setting, and gold ball connectors link?each oval together. The piece fastens together at a simple gold push clasp, which is engraved with a set of initials in flowing cursive script.?A simply exquisite piece of art, this magnificent Pietra Dura bracelet looks stunning when worn and would make a special addition to any Victorian collection!
Measurements: The bracelet?measures approximately 7 3/4" long and would fit an average sized wrist. Each Pietra Dura oval link measures 1 1/4" tall and 1 1/8" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet?is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the?gold setting or inlaid stones that form the Pietra Dura design. The push clasp is secure and in good working condition.
